John H. Collins ist selbst unter filmhistorisch Bewanderten ein kaum bekannter Name. Umso grösser war die allgemeine Begeisterung über seine Wiederentdeckung am Stummfilmfestival in Pordenone 2016. (www.filmpodium.ch)
Critiques (en Allemand): «Er [John H. Collins] drehte 1914/15 bei Edison erste Kurzfilme und danach rund zwei Dutzend Spielfilme, bis die Grippewelle 1918 den knapp 29-Jährigen dahinraffte. (…) Am deutlichsten traten die Qualitäten von Collins in Blue Jeans (1917) zu Tage. Der Film wirkt im Vergleich zu Griffith-Filmen jener Zeit viel direkter zupackend, moderner auch in der Spielweise. Dazu trägt wesentlich Viola Dana bei, Collins’ Ehefrau und bevorzugte Hauptdarstellerin. Sie verleiht der eher konventionellen Story durch eine starke Frauenfigur eine ungewöhnliche Note. Remarques géneraux: Von der ursprünglichen Länge des Films mit 6890 ft sind 5639 ft im George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY. erhalten, Allerdings fehlen die opening credits und die originalen Zwischentitel bis auf eine Titelkarte. Die seinerzeit besonders gestalteten Zwischentitel sind anscheinend verloren. (lhg 2016)
